Divine Dutch Oven Style Turkey

Cast iron cooking is as popular now as it was centuries ago. As in the past, today’s cooks have discovered that cast iron skillets, griddles, pots, pans, Dutch ovens and other types of cast iron cookware  are capable of producing an amazing array of delicious, home cooked meals.  We have collected hundreds of recipes over the years and we hope you will use them to create some great cast iron cooking for your family and friends!

With few ingredients required you may wonder exactly how this turkey dish could taste so succulent! This recipe cooks nicely and is perfect for serving to guests or to spice up family dinners. Keep in mind that the turkey will be easier to cut if you let it sit for bit after it is completed cooking!

Cooking Instructions:

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 1 1/2 hours
*Makes about 6-8 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole turkey breast (5-7lbs) or whole chicken
  • 2 whole garlic bulbs, plus 10 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 jar (16oz) honey
  • 2 cans (14oz, each) chicken broth
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

Cooking Steps:

A) Clean the turkey, put two whole cloves into the cavity, and set aside for further instruction.
B) Set oven to 350 degrees to preheat.
C) Take the garlic slices and onion and saute them in your cast iron dutch oven. Then add honey, 1 can of chicken stock, and the orange juice. Stir nicely and take away from the heat source.
D) Put the turkey into the cast iron oven and cover.
E) Let the turkey bake for about 1 hour and twenty minutes, add pan juices every 15 minutes. When needed, add some of the other can of chicken stock. When it is completed cooking, carefully remove it from the oven and put it on a serving platter.
F) Let it sit for a little more than 10 minutes before cutting to serve and enjoy!
