  
Southern Style Turnip Greens
Cast iron cooking is as popular now as it was centuries ago. As in
the past, today’s cooks have discovered that cast iron skillets, griddles, pots, pans, Dutch ovens and other
types of cast iron cookware are capable of producing an amazing array of delicious, home cooked
meals. We have collected hundreds of recipes over the years and we hope you will use them to create
some great cast iron cooking for your family and friends!
3 pounds of greens will be necessary for this recipe. It may sound like too
much, but they will shrink in the process of cooking.
Cooking Instructions:
Prep Time: 45 minutes
Cooking Time: 3 hours *Makes about 6 servings
Ingredients:
- ½
pound of sliced salt pork
- 3
pounds of turnip greens
- ½ cup
of chicken broth
- ½
teaspoon of sugar
- Salt
and pepper
- 4
peeled and diced turnips
Cooking Steps:
A) Tear the greens into medium pieces after cleaning them.
B) Fry the pork over medium-high temperatures in a large cast-iron Dutch oven until cooked. Add in the greens and constantly rotate them so that
they are soaked in the pork drippings.
C) Mix in the sugar, broth, salt and pepper. Cover and reduce the heat.
D) Cook the greens for about 2 to 3 hours, but be sure that they don’t become scorched. Add water to
moisten!
