Succulent Brisket of Beef

Cast iron cooking is as popular now as it was centuries ago. As in the past, today’s cooks have discovered that cast iron skillets, griddles, pots, pans, Dutch ovens and other types of cast iron cookware  are capable of producing an amazing array of delicious, home cooked meals.  We have collected hundreds of recipes over the years and we hope you will use them to create some great cast iron cooking for your family and friends!

There are a few things you should know about brisket before executing this recipe. Coming from the front of the cow’s breast, the brisket is cut into two pieces, the flat cut and the point cut. For flavors sake, I would recommend using the point cut. The typically fattier piece of meat will hold more flavor, however, if you wish to go for a leaner option, the flat cut will be just as good.

Cooking Instructions:

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 3- 3½ hours
*Makes about 8 servings

Ingredients:

  • 4 lb beef brisket
  • 3 tablespoons Canola oil
  • 1/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper

Cooking Steps:

A) Set oven to 300 degrees to preheat. Put your Canola oil in the bottom of your cast iron Dutch oven (preferably 7-quart) and carefully place it into the preheating oven.
B) In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, garlic powder, chili powder, salt, pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Gently rub all sides of your brisket with the spices.
C) Put your brisket into the cast iron Dutch oven and add about 1½ cups of water to the Dutch oven. Let the brisket bake for about 2 hours at 300 degrees.
D) Next, after two hours, increase the temperature to 350 degrees and cook for another 1-1½. Occasionally check on the brisket to see if another ½ of water is needed for the brisket (so it doesn’t burn).
E) When the brisket is tender, take it out of the oven to serve. When cutting the brisket, be sure to cut diagonally and carefully drizzle the slices with the pan juices. Serve and enjoy!
